Project summary

Ethiopian National Media Support (ENMS) organized two days conference on the “Ethiopian Media Key Stakeholders Coalition” Establishment Conference (“የኢትዮጵያ ሚዲያ ባለድርሻ አካላት ጥምረት” የምሥረታ ጉባኤ) on February 24th & 25th at the Gold Mark International Hotel in Bishoftu Town.

The general objective of the conference was to bring together various media associations, networks, media developers, and think tanks in Ethiopia to reflect on the importance of the establishment of the coalition that primarily aims at looking for, identifying, and providing technical and financial support to all key media stakeholders in the country.

The conference targeted 52 participants from diverse groups of journalists’ associations, networks, media support organizations, representatives of the Ethiopian Media authority (EMA) in Ethiopia.

In the conference, three media experts presented papers on various themes. The first was presented on “Networking trends, prospects, and challenges” by Dr. Mulatu Alemayehu, Executive Director, ENMS. The topic of “Legal aspects of networking, alliance, and consortium issues” by Mr. Solomon Goshu, from IMS, Program Officer. And, “What type of media alliance is expected and its uniqueness?” was presented by Mrs. Tsedale G/Tsadik, from Debrebrehane University (DBU). 

On the other hand, three media networks, one local consortium and the other two international and regional networks shared their experience to the participants. Accordingly, the Consortium of Christian Relief and Development Associations (CCRDA), The Media Alliance of Zimbabwe, and Global Investigative Journalism Network were names of the organizations that shared their knowledge and practical experiences at the conference.    

The participants had also group discussions and presented briefly their views on the given themes that focused on how to establish the coalition and stakeholder’s next step in the task. There were reflections, comments, and questions raised by the participants after the presentations and group discussions. The conference ended by selecting and forming an independent and diverse working group that works in realizing the coalition through identifying common agendas.
