The Ethnification of Ethiopian Media

Implemented by:  ENMS in collaboration with IMS

Financer:  Fojo-IMS

Project summary

ENMS, in collaboration with IMS-FOJO, successfully launched the study book “The Ethnification of Ethiopian Media” on Thursday, December 17, 2020, via a webinar discussion. Terje Skjerdal (Ph.D.) and Mulatu Alemayehu (Ph.D.) wrote the study, which was commissioned by FOJO-IMS. The goal of the webinar discussion was to make the study’s findings more widely available and accessible, as well as to encourage further discussion among stakeholders.

The study book discusses the interaction between Ethiopian media and Identity politics in the country during the past few years. The study examines the role of media in ethnic tensions in Ethiopia as well as how media practitioners are concerned about the significant trend toward more polarisation fuelled by ethno-nationalistic media of different origin and ownership, vis-à-vis federal-Ethiopian channels.
